The Airport

Fun story......since we have an international flight we showed up at the airport a little over 2 hours early.

That was 3:00 in the morning.

After arriving we sat for an hour because Continental's employees don't show up until 4.

Good Morning!

Happy Anniversary!

Today my husband and I are leaving on a cruise to Alaska for our 15 year anniversary! I plan on journaling every day so that I can show you the beautiful pictures and tell you about our adventures, so even though you won't hear from me for a few days there is much to come! (Oh, and that's not my ship, just a pic of some random cruise ship in Alaska! haha!)

A Tale of Two Rooms*

I believe that everyone deserves to have their own space. For the most part, this means that my children get to decorate their rooms to their tastes and desires. It also means that as long as I am able to walk through their room without getting lost or maimed they can basically keep them as neat or as messy as they desire. Once a week they have to pick up their rooms, empty their laundry baskets, etc. However, with Aunt Tippy and Uncle Michael coming here to take care of the kids while we are in Alaska I decided I wanted to make things a little bit nicer. Soooo, on Friday I decided to have my children clean - really clean - their bedrooms.

Apparently this is equivalent to horrific forms of torture, and may even be used as one in some countries.

On my lifelong quest to become the perfect mom I glean information from wherever I can. Books, advice - and sometimes even real life. On Friday, I learned several things. Here's a list of the top 10.

1) My children would rather give away all of their toys than clean their room (and are horrified that I'm okay with that!)

2) Nathanael enjoys organization, and is incredibly frustrated with Noah's "fall where they may" cleaning style

3) When the aforementioned frustration reaches it's boiling point very bad things can and will happen - including throwing away all of your little brothers toys and then finally deciding that quite obviously no one loves you and that you would rather take a nap than do anything else. The best part about this nap is that it is everyone else's fault that you can't sleep, and has nothing to do with the fact that you are sweating and sleeping under 6 blankets with the light on

4) Dressing up like nerds and spies are a very necessary part of cleaning your room

5) My children believe that they can (and are) cleaning their rooms even when they aren't in them

6) Suitcases, backpacks and the back part of bookcases are all acceptable places to hide the things that you don't want to clean up. When they are discovered screams of "You never told me to clean that" and "WHAT!?!? That's not fair" will fill the air

7) Carlye and Noah sleep with books, pens, journals, dolls, clay pots that they made at school, stuffed animals, various articles of clothing, flashlights, and who knows what else in their beds with them. Not to mention Noah had a stash of candy hidden in his bed as well that came from heaven only knows where. When I discovered the bag and took it away he mourned for an hour.

8) Breakfast, lunch and a snack are not enough sustenance for children being forced to perform such strenuous activity as cleaning their room. As a result of the debilitating hunger and excruciating pain your children may fall upon the floor shrieking that they are starving to death and that you mustn't really love them.

9) 8 1/2 hours is not enough time for 3 children to clean 2 rooms. And to think otherwise is to be "completely unfair!"

10) It takes my children less than two days to return their bedrooms to the exact same state that they were in on Friday. Even though we threw away 4 (yes 4) trash bags worth of stuff.

Oh, and Carlye had her friends over again the other day for a slumber party. When the girls started playing make-up they begged Noah to please let them dress him up like a girl again. Noah refused, and said they could only do "boy" make-up on him. This is what the girls came up with:

I guess as far as make-up goes there is nothing more masculine than looking like you've been beat up!

*I changed the title because the previous one went badly with the pic!

I's a BOY! Alaska.....and other stuff

It's a boy! Tiffany and Michael have officially found out and Victoria is going to have a little brother. As of right now she would like to name him Clarence. Tiffany and Michael not so much. Of course, we're just happy that Victoria has forgiven him for being a boy. Originally she wanted a baby sister, then she decided that she wanted twins - Clara and Clarence. Of course, her other suggestion for baby brother was Flynn Rider (from Tangled, for those of you not fortunate enough to know that off-hand). Carlye is thrilled because this evens out the cousins on Carl's side of the family. There are now officially 4 girls and 4 boys.

We are leaving for Alaska soon. I will be leaving my children for 10 days while my hubby and I go and celebrate our 15 year anniversary. I am so excited! And I am so sad! Yes, both at the same time. I don't leave my children very often, and it is a rare occurrence indeed for me to leave them for more than one night at a time. Don't get me wrong - I think that it's important for my hubby and I to have time together, and we do. But 10 days is a LONG time. Of course, they will be in great hands with an aunt and uncle who love them and will probably spoil them rotten, so......

I have decided that I am completely aggravated with being a woman. Seriously, between make-up and lotions and shaving and exfoliating and plucking my eyebrows and painting my toenails and owning more than one pair of shoes and trimming my fingernails and on and on and on and on. It gets really aggravating. I am ready to stop shaving my legs, leave the guitar strings in my eyebrows, stop wearing make up and wear my black flip flops with everything. And, honestly, I am probably a lower maintenance girl than most. I own a pair of brown flip flops and a pair of black flip flops and I wear them with everything. I wear very little make-up, mostly just mascara and lip gloss, and I love t-shirts and shorts. Plus, I am sick of the crazy unrealistic stick thin models and actresses who have never heard of stretch marks, muffin tops or cellulite. I was them before I had my third child, and now all I have to say is that muffin tops are the new beautiful. Honestly, I just get tired of it all sometimes. Do you?

Marriage and our Children

Recently I became aware of a cultural phenomenon here in the United States. If I'd been paying attention (or cared) I would have noticed it before now, but typically as people we notice what affects us at the time, and this didn't.

I'm talking about the trend for women to marry later and later and later.

This is bothering me because of a book that I am reading called "5 Conversations You Must Have With Your Daughter" and yes - if you have a girl I really, really, really, really super strongly encourage you to read this book.

But I digress. Again, there is a growing trend to go to college and enjoying being "single" while putting marriage and families on the back burner and kids waiting until they are older and older to get married. Where girls used to dream about getting married and having kids they now dream about going to college, climbing the corporate ladder and then having a family. Sometimes they get married in there, sometimes they don't. Now I know that this is largely in secular circles, but it is beginning to happen more and more in Christian circles as well. I have a huge problem with this.

Why? For several reasons. Our children are being sexualized at younger and younger ages, and even Disney channel has had to be banned in my house because of the sexually dressed girls and the drive to have a boyfriend or a girlfriend at a very young age. It's not uncommon to see kids begin dating at 12, 13 and 14 years old. And then what happens? Before they are 15 years old they have gone everywhere and done everything that is "safe" and then we are treading on dangerous water - for years. Yet we are telling them to "wait until they are married" while they are dealing with unhealthy peer pressure and sexual appetites that were awakened way to early! My children aren't allowed to date until they are 16, and we have strict policies in force for when it starts happening. However, if you start dating when you are 16 and then wait until you are 25 or 26 to get married - again, we are tempting our children in ways they were not intended to be simply because society says you shouldn't get married right out of high school or while you are in college. Will everyone start dating at 16? Of course not. Will some people be older when they get married? YES! And some may never marry. However, getting married and having a family are NOT the horrible things that we are turning them into. It's great to get married. It's great to have kids. And yes - I do think that it's more important than being the CEO of the Twinkie corporation!

Concerned that I may have had a hand in encouraging this type of thought process in my own children with my off the cuff comments such as "You can't get married until you're 40" and "You can start dating when you are 39" I sat down to have a little talk with them.

When I asked Noah how many kids he was going to have he said 3. Unless Brookie wants more and I'm okay with that, too.

After doing some mental calculations I think that it will be safe for him and Brookie to be friends for about 5 more years, maybe 6 and then we will need to separate them until they are 18! Other than that, great answer!

Carlye told me that she is going to get married when she is 18 and have two kids, a boy and a girl and then see how many more her husband wants after that! I asked her about college and she said that yes, she is going to college. When I asked her what she would do if she had kids while she was in college she said that she would take classes online so that she could stay home with her kids.

Whew - I haven't ruined her. She has a pretty good balance on everything. Except the whole getting married at 18...........

Nathanael told me that he is never getting married because girls are icky. For a 9 year old I'm perfectly happy with this answer!

I know that this post may sound opinionated, and please know that I'm not forcing my opinion on anyone else. I'm simply using my blog for what it was intended - a way for me to express my feelings and opinions. So take it or leave it, but if you disagree with me please know that I still love you!

Even if you are wrong! :-)

Rambling

Life is changing a lot for us right now. My daughter is going is growing up, and there are so many changes for her right now. As a result of this, Carl and I have been pondering a lot of things. Everyone I know has their own opinions about what they should do scholastically for their children and while we do not try to force our beliefs on others, there are several conclusions that Carl and I have come to (after a LOT of prayer) for our own children. One thing that we know is that our children will not continue in our current school district past 5th grade. No exceptions. Okay, one exception - if a burning bush appears in my living room and I am specifically told to send my children to the public high school here in town, I will. Otherwise it is a firm and resounding NO!

So here is my conundrum. Carl and I have less than a year to decide if we will send our oldest to an out of district school, a private school or home school. Every option has it's pros and cons. Not one will be problem-less or easy, and each of our children deserve the respect of a decision made specifically for them. To say that what works for Carlye will automatically work for Nathanael or Noah is like making all of them wear the same pants - they probably won't fit right, and pink pants may look funny on my boys! All joking aside, though, we want to make the correct decision for each one of our children. And that is so difficult!

We have a lot of things to consider. Friends (or the lack thereof), the quality of academics, will my children receive a reinforcement of the values that we hold as a family? Are athletics or music or drama a deciding factor or can they be supplemented elsewhere? Can I be as involved with my kids while they are at school if they are at two different schools? And, oh - there are so many more!

Life is full of difficult decisions, and as my children grow there seem to be so, so many to make!

Kayak

Nathanael bought himself a kayak with his birthday money this year. Today the kids were hanging out with their friends Tate and Olive and their little brother Beckham. While they were here we went fishing - of course! So here are some pictures of the kids kayaking, catching fish in the kayak (yay for team work!) and just hanging out together. Isn't the kayak so cute! I love it! One of the best birthday purchases in history!

Shoes

My daughter can wear my shoes now.

I have a serious problem with this.

There are multiple reasons for this.

1) She is too little to be wearing my shoes
2) I can't find my shoes anymore - and it's not just me losing them, which makes it doubly hard to get dressed!
3) Once she has worn them she thinks they are hers and won't give them back!

This is also starting to cross over into my clothing. Carl is even having a hard time differentiating between our clothes now! All I have to say is thank heavens I only have one daughter! Then I at least know which room to look in!

Yesterday

Sorry I didn't blog yesterday. I have an excuse, but it's a really horrible one.

They were running a special and I bought the game of Scrabble for my iPad for 99 cents.

And I'm totally addicted.

Seriously. It may be the best/worst thing that I've ever done.

Really.

Formal Wear

My husband and I leave for our Alaskan Cruise in about 17 days. On our cruise we will have two formal nights, which I love! What girl doesn't like a chance to dress up?!?! So, even though I have perfectly acceptable solutions for this in the form of re-purposed bridesmaids dresses I decided that it would be fun to go and actually - for the first time ever - buy a formal gown.

I was very, very wrong.

What I envisioned was something more or less along these lines:

What we found was more along the lines of this:

While my children thought that these delicious little confections were quite beautiful I was not quite convinced. However, if I had any self-esteem left at all it was torn from me while my daughter helped me try on dresses. "Mommy, can you suck in more? I can't zip this!" "Mommy, I found this special underwear I want you to try" as she held up a pair of tummy flattening undergarments. Thinking she was joking I laughed. "No mommy, I'm serious" she informed me.

A Macy's, Dillards, JC Penneys and White House, Black Dress later I finally found a dress at the Dress Barn.

Yep. The Dress Barn.

It's been a great day.

Happy 4th of July!

I hope that your day was filled with fun, food and family. And above all, I pray that your day was filled with moments of thankfulness and reflection. I hope that at least once you thought about this beautiful country that we are blessed to live in and the freedoms that we enjoy every day! Thank you heroes for keeping us safe and free! God bless America!

The Neverending Birthday

Today we celebrated Cassie and Nathanael's family birthday, and I have decided that my children always have the birthdays that never end. They just go on and on and on and on and........

Anyway, today we ate cake, smashed a pinata and celebrated - hopefully for the last time - our amazing kiddos.

Nathanael is thrilled because he was given an iTunes card, and he's really enjoyed buying books on his iPod. He just bought the first Hardy Boys book, so we'll see how he likes it. Of course, he also had to buy season 2 of Scooby Doo (the old ones) because what little boy can grow up without Scooby Doo?

He's also excited because he now has enough money (thanks in large part to you Grandma and Grandpa and Popi and Grandma Doreen!) to buy himself a kayak. He's going to use it to fish up and down the creek here in our backyard. I can't wait to take pictures to show you. Of course, unless we get some rain there won't be any water to kayak in, but we're praying for rain, so........

He also was given a baseball bat, glove and ball. We may need to exchange his glove because it's for the wrong hand, but he informed me that he's 'ambidesforous' (ambidextrous - which he actually is) so it'll be fine.

Hyatt Resort

Well, the family reunion was a lot of fun! We were at the Hyatt, and can I just say - thank you Priceline! :-) We went swimming, floated in the "river" that connects the pools, made s'mores, played on the man made beach, watched movies on the lawn and just had a really great time! It was definitely better than being at a lake that is 22 feet down.

Here's a picture of Noah and Victoria getting ready to watch a movie on the lawn. They provide the movie, the blankets and the popcorn! While we were there they showed Beezus and Ramona and Toy Story 3.

Nathanael was sitting by me at the pool when I snapped this picture. The kids loved the volleyball net in the background, as well as the basketball hoop. It's even great for infants. Chloe is only 9 mos old, and she LOVED floating on the man-made river. Apparently it's a great place for a nap.

I was able to snap one picture of Carl and the kids and my niece Victoria before they went floating away. More often than not the kids would just walk around the 'river.' Apparently that was much more fun than floating!

I'm sad that I only got a few pictures, but it's not a very camera friendly environment. I'm really thinking there needs to be a Bailey Family reunion here sometime! (hint-hint)

Hard day

Today has been a hard day. A dear friend of mine lost her husband and today was his memorial service. His daughters are 12 and 17. It was sad, but I am so proud of that whole family and their incredible strength.

My back is hurting because we were rear ended while traveling to Carls family reunion. I can't take ibuprofen because of my stomach. The muscle relaxers that were prescribed could cause me to have the same reaction that I had when I took my moms meds on accident when I had a migraine as a little girl. I ended up in ICU then. Needless to say I have a new prescription.

And my entire family is together right now and I couldn't go. So that makes me sad, too.

Pictures

Here are the pictures to go with yesterdays blog!

Pedicures: The girls and I all got matching blue zebra striped toe nails!

Feathers: You can see Carlye's, Cassies is pink and kind of hiding and Victoria's is pink on the right side. May I just say that once little girls have decided what feather they are going to put in their hair you CANNOT change their mind to a smaller, thinner or different colored feather. Just for those of you who need to know these things!

Queen B's! Yummy princess plates and your own tea pot! Nothing beats pouring and adding sugar cubes and honey - even if you don't ever drink your raspberry tea (or apple juice in a pot!).
