We have watched a lot of movies lately. I saw The Vow, and was disappointed, but I think I may like it now that I've thought about it - Man on A Ledge was pretty good. It was awesome to watch Star Wars on the big screen with my kiddos, and for family movie night we watched Puss in Boots (which I thought was inappropriate in places so it made me mad. I mean - it's made for kids for heavens sake!). However, I think the one that has affected us the most lately is one that I haven't even seen.
Journey to the Center of the Earth 2.
Why, you may ask?
Because now my 7 year old is continually wowing us with his 'peck pop of love.' Which is even more awesome because he calls it his pick pack of love.
Truly, it is something to behold.

Spin Class, Yoga and Being a Mom
Today I took my very first spin class.
I'm having a very difficult time sitting now. Apparently they sell special padded shorts for people who take cycling classes so that you don't bruise your nether region. REALLY wish I would have known that before the class. I think I'm going to simply lay down for the next few days. I will say, though, that I LOVED LOVED LOVED the class. It didn't hurt my back or my knee, and it was a seriously hard workout. I'm hoping I found something that I love as much as running.
Yoga is wonderful, too. It has so many similarities to ballet, and is such a graceful, restful exercise. It has helped my back immensely, and I look forward to the days when I get to take yoga.
Meanwhile, the mom-life continues.
This morning when we were reading the Bible Noah said, "And then the di-skip-a-lees went up to..." "I think you mean disciples, Noah" stated Nathanael. "Ohhhhh. Thanks brother." I, however, think that di-skip-a-lees is a pretty cool. We might start using it. He's also just as big of a dare devil as ever, and maybe a tiny bit clumsy as well. Yesterday I went in to give a note to the school nurse and Noah was in there getting his eyes checked. You see, after they said the Pledge of Allegiance he went to sit down and forgot that he had pushed his chair in, so he fell all the way backwards and slammed his head into the desk behind him. Sadly, the school nurse is used to running concussion checks on our Noah.
Nathanael has started reading The Chronicles of Narnia. I love how excited he gets about reading them. It's fun to listen to him discussing the books and see how quickly he finishes them and moves on to the next one. He's reading Prince Caspian right now, but really liked The Horse & His Boy. He also told me that he's decided that he wants to play the violin next year, and the bass cello next year. You never know what to expect with him! Oh, and he is officially allergic to gluten. Dr's appointment was yesterday and they confirmed it. Gluten free lifestyle here we come.
Carlye is upsetting me greatly. She came to me and wants to start shaving her legs. When I informed her that she is WAY too little to shave her legs she told me that ALL of her friends are already shaving their legs. (Clearly, she needs to make new friends!) She also has little boys asking her to be their girlfriend (she said no and ran away), and wants to start wearing make up. My solution is to buy her some little dolls.
And lock her in her room.
That should stop it.

Catch up
Okay, so I have no idea how to play catch up over the last couple of weeks, so I'm not even going to try. I will fill you in on the details, and catch you up in future blogs if I need to.
The kids are doing GREAT! School is amazing and the kids are loving it and doing well. Princess Priss is thriving in school, loving book club and overall being a typical pre-teen. She started private viola lessons, and we are so proud of her dedication and love of music. Now starts the saving so that we can buy her her own instrument, case, bow, shoulder rest, a practice mute, a tuner/metronome with a pick up, an instrument stand, a music stand, music.......
And on a completely un-related - yet somehow so related - note, the dentist said that it's time for braces. And that we need to get them quickly.
Yay.
We've also decided that she will be home schooling next year, so we are beginning our preparations for that. I told her that for her PE she was going to be doing my yoga classes with me. She has been petitioning for me to change my mind ever since.
Nathanael has been back on gluten for 8 weeks now. He's had two stomach aches, and his eczema is back, but other than that he is doing really well. Tomorrow is his check-up, and we are assuming we will find out it is a sensitivity, not a full blown allergy. Guitar is great. School is great. Unless there is a book report due. Then for some reason he throws himself onto the ground, writhing and sobbing uncontrollably. Even though he is an amazing artist and writer there is something about having to actually do something about it that is overwhelming. His last book report was on King Arthur (which I assumed was the young readers version) and he made a scrapbook about the key points of the book with illustrations. My favorite page/illustration was the one captioned "King Arthur finds out that his Queen is more than friends with another king." Love-ly.
Our youngest has taken great joy in the release of Star Wars in 3D. He talks daily of his dreams of becoming a real Jedi. School is still a super party in his mind, and his joy spreads to others. He's taking piano lessons as well, and loves making up songs as he does his chores. Sadly, his inability to carry a tune may be a hindrance to his musical/Jedi career. His sleep walking is letting up as well, which means that I'm sleeping a little better. Reading is becoming one of his favorite past times, and he is devouring EVERYTHING in sight. I'm so thankful to have 3 little bookworms on my hands! Sadly, our little man also had his first cavities. Storing candy in his pillowcase and eating it after lights out has finally caught up with him, and he had 5 - yes 5 - cavities at his last check up. Interestingly enough, we saw a toothless man as we were leaving the dentist office. He has been brushing more, has quit sneaking candy, and was very thankful when the dentist fixed his teeth.
I think that's enough for now. Hopefully I will be able to blog more regularly - I've missed everyone!

Funerals and the giggles
Well, I have run the gauntlet and I have survived. In less than 5 days I attended funerals for three people. It was hard, and sad.
Of course, in everything there is something funny.
Last Friday night Carl and I went to the funeral home in Fredericksburg to see the family of the two teens who died in the fire. Our Pastor was unable to be there because our dear friend Mrs. Martha was dying, and he wanted to be with her. Plus, he knew he was doing the funeral the very next day for Brian and Justine. When we arrived at the funeral home we were so shocked to see how many people were there - 400 or 500 people easy, with all of the overflow rooms at the funeral home filled to capacity, and people crammed into the yard, all the way to the street! When we finally made our way inside of the building we found out they were doing some sort of a service, which confused us because we knew that the official funeral was being held on Saturday. What was even more confusing for us was that everything was being done in Spanish, so we had a difficult time understanding what was happening. Then, when we saw a member of the family they informed us that they had been waiting for us and that Carl was going to be leading the service.
I wish you could have seen Carl's face.
Just imagine horrible and extreme panic. I kid you not when I say that he glanced back at the door - I know he was considering running. We tried to convince them that this was a misunderstanding, and we weren't supposed to lead the service, but they insisted that they wanted to hear something from "the Brother." Carl ended up doing it, and it went really well - considering Carl had never done anything like that before. And he can't speak Spanish.
When we walked out of the funeral home at the end of the evening Carl said, "That is the most horrible thing that I have ever had to do." I had been crying all week, I mean, this was a truly horrible thing, but for some reason when we got in the car I got the giggles and laughed almost the whole way home. I just kept picturing Carl's face when they told him he was doing the service - even now it makes me giggle!
So Carl has now officially performed his first Rosary service (from what we understand that's what it was). And we aren't even Catholic.........

Last few pictures
This morning an amazing woman passed away, Mrs. Martha Milting. She's been sick for a while, and slipped into a coma on Friday, so we knew it was only a matter of time. Se was in her 70's and was suffering from kidney failure as a result of other ailments. She lost her husband a little over a year ago, and was ready to go home. This has been a really hard week. In order to cheer myself up I decided to post the last few pictures from the ball that I thought anyone might actually care about!

Justine and Brian
Early yesterday morning 2 teenagers in Fredericksburg passed away when their home burned to the ground. Their names were Justine (13 years) and Brian (15 years). They have 2 older siblings, and a younger one, Bruce who is 9 (the same age as Nathanael). Their daddy, Armando, was burned over 40% of his body trying to rescue his kids. It's been a hard day for all of us. I've known the younger three kids for over five years and I'm having a hard time processing everything. It is so tragic and sad. On top of all of this tragedy, they've lost everything they've ever owned - and they didn't have insurance on their home. Please pray for the family. Carl and I will be going to Brooke Army Medical tomorrow to see the wife and surviving children. It's been a really hard day.
